  • Overview on the Open Source Movement

If I had to define the word open-source, I would say free software.  After reading the article, How the Open Source Movement Has Changed Education, I was amazed  how the open source market has opened up in the educational field.  Open Source is actually defined as software that allows you to edit and modify to your preference and it is free. Massachusetts Intstitute of Technology(MIT) is one of 10 success studies viewed.  Using open source to provide students with syllabi, lecture notes, calendars, exams and a host of other sevices needed by college students allowed them to truly forfill their mission statement which is to "serve the nation and the world in the 21st century". After this, MIT set a trend for other colleges to follow.  The downfall to this is that the public does not recieve credit for taking the classes.  The knowledge is there, but no credit is received.

This movement sparked OpenCourseWare Consortium which includes members from well over 16 countries. This consortium allows participants to share open-source resources.  Some to mention are software such as Linux. A well known browser that was shared in Mozilla Firefox.

  • Show Me The Money!!!!

The Best Things in Life are Free!!!

As a teacher in a Charlotte North Carolina Public School, I find myself spending more and more money for classroom instruction.  Since my school is deemed low-performing, one would think that teachers would be served with a silver platter.  I do not find that happening!  There is even an issue with receiving paper.  What school can function without the use of paper?  My students are low in 2 area's: Academics and Socio-economic. Most come to school without tools for school, and I am trying despirately to educate this population.  Education is not an essential part of their lives.  Survival is more important.  If I were to write a grant, I would consider the community in which these students live.  Perhaps setting up seminars for parents, that teach them how to monitor students homework records and provide them with school supplies each month during the school year.

The Process for finding funding is one that requires some thought.  You must always have the students as you primary focus.  The next step is the most crucial, which is to design a solution to your initial problem.  This is the part in which you will be seeking funding to help solve your problem.  When applying for a grant is is very important to follow the directives carefully and stick with the parameters of the application.

Overall, grant writing is a process.  It can be as hard as you make it.  I find that if you keep it simple, and straight to the point your viewers will not become bored.  The main thing to remember is that you are focusing on student achievement!
